An off-duty Mountie was mauled by a bear on a trail north of Quesnel yesterday.
Quesnel RCMP Sgt. Gary Clark-Marlow said the officer was jogging at 10 Mile Lake with his two dogs at noon.
Clark-Marlow said the dogs were running ahead of the officer, who did not want to be named, when they encountered a medium-sized black bear.
“The bear chased the dogs back towards the victim and then the bear engaged the dogs,” Clark-Marlow said.
“One of the dogs was in danger of severe injury and the victim then engaged the bear, kicking it.”
The bear then turned on the victim and a four-way brawl ensued, with the man’s dogs defending the victim before the bear retreated into the bush.
The officer was treated for puncture and claw wounds and released.
